POOR BABY, YOUR BONUSES ARE TOO SMALL, SHOULD I SHED A TEAR OR TWO
YOU REALLY WANT TO WHINE, TRY LIVING IN SOMEONE ELSE’S SHOES FOR A WHILE
I read this great article this morning, Wall Street Employees Threaten To Quit If Bonuses Aren’t Up To Snuff by Jillian Berman on HuffingtonPost [link below] which got me thinking about greed. Not an unusual topic when discussing Wall Street. The article was on brokers from Wall Street firms who might quit their jobs because their annual year-end bonus could be a lot smaller then expected. If it is true that some employees are threatening to quit over this, one question comes to mind: How much money is good enough for you?
According to Simplyhired.com, the current average salary for wall street stock broker jobs listed is $114,000. Not bad if you ask me. In a time when people are happy just to have job. Where unemployment continues at a high rate, salary raises are few and far between; where many people have had to take a cut in salary or take days off without pay. Is it simply greed for someone who makes a large salary to bitch if their bonus is shrunk.
If it’s true that the bonuses, in many cases, are considered part of their annual salary, then each year their salary should fluctuate with the amount of sales they procure. Hence if the sales are lower, the employee in fact should get a lower salary. As far as I know most brokers are paid [at least] partially in commission, so if the sales aren’t up to snuff, their pay would be less. So they should be happy with whatever bonus they do receive. And if the CEO’s and heads of Corporations can prove profits were down, then they should  pay their employees less. Therefore these brokers should just shut up like the rest of us when we don’t get raises.
Right now people are happy just having a job. Many have to take two or three just to get by. So when I hear reports about the rich griping, it makes me think What’s wrong with these people?’  I know a lot of us spend as much money as we make or more, to live the lives we do, and then grow accustomed to living beyond our means.
So when unforeseen or  financial burden occurs, or in this case you receive less then you expect from your bonus; you may want to bitch out loud. Please think before you do. The poor are listening and sorry we don’t feel sorry for you. What the rest of us see are spoiled brats who live The Life of Riley. Dressing in clothes most of us can’t afford to try on. Living in condo’s that cost millions while we struggle to pay our monthly rents.  Believe me, we won’t be shedding any tears when you bitch that you can't afford your $250 lunches anymore.
So go ahead and quit. I’m sure there are thousands waiting to suffer at your measly salary. And I hope you saved up, cause getting that next job might not be so easy.
